All who identify as women of color are invited to join the Women of Color Network (WOCN) for faculty and staff here at SUNY New Paltz.
Dr. Jessica N. Pabón explains, “I started the network in spring 2016 in the hopes that we could sustain one another by building a meaningful community that offered some of the practical and emotional tools necessary for women of color to thrive within academia.
Our meetings provide a unique opportunity to interact with folks who may work in different areas of the college as well as for new staff or junior faculty to foster mentorships with senior staff or faculty. With our meetings, we make the space for members to share personal and professional challenges and successes in a confidential environment; meeting topics are not set ahead of time (no agenda!) but rather arise organically based on the needs of our members. While we are open to members taking action on particular topics, we do not wish to add to our responsibilities with expectations for more service work; in short, the WOCN is not a committee.
I am currently working on our first meeting of the year, focused on self-care practices.
in solidarity,
Jessica
