Fac / Staff Adventure Group outing to Overlook Mountain and abandoned hotel, Woodstock, NY Thurs., June 17, leaving NP campus at 4:00 p.m.

Join the Adventure Group for a hike to Overlook Mountain to visit a ruined hotel and see a marvelous view of the Ashokan Reservoir. This is a pretty long hike up a rough road and not wheelchair accessible. Hike is 5 miles round trip. Let us know if you are coming to ease coordination: (facultycenter@newpaltz.edu). Free. Dogs on leashes and other companion welcome.

We will gather on Plattekill Ave between College Hall and New Science for carpools at 4:00 p.m. or meet on the mountain in parking lot near monastery at approximately 4:45 p.m.

FASTEST from NEW PALTZ/POK:  Take Thruway north to exit 19/Kingston, north/west on route 28, then turn into Woodstock on NY 375, left on Mill Hill road into town, right on Rock City Road at intersection at top of hill (you can see the green), follow this all the way to the top – it turns into Meads Mountain Road.

Alternate: route 32 north into Kingston; left on Washington Avenue; go through roundabout (skipping 87/thruway) and continue north/west on route 28/Col Chandler Drive for 6 miles, then right on NY 375 into Woodstock; left on Mill Hill Road into town; right on Rock City Road a you hit the middle of the village; continue on Meads Mountain Road to the top (including a slight left). When you see the Tibetan monastery on your left, you have arrived.

  • ONLY FROM NORTH!! Take New York State Thruway to Exit 20 (Saugerties).
  • Take a left out of the NYS Thruway entrance road.
  • (IF you came south on the Thruway) Take a right onto Route 212 West
  • Go approximately 10 miles to Woodstock, NY
  • When you come into the center of the village take a RIGHT onto Rock City Road.
  • Rock City Road will turn into Meads Mountain Road.
  • When you reach the top of the hill, look for a small dirt parking lot on the right. Opposite the Tibetan monastery.
