Building Connection, Presence & Substantive Interaction in the Online/Hybrid Learning Environment with Kate Bohan, Rich Mc Elrath, and Sarah Wyman, Mon. Feb 8, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

Based on the Provost’s report and SUNY Chancellor Malatras’s directive, we will present a discussion about ways to establish presence and active engagement or substantive interaction in the online/hybrid classroom and to ensure connections between:

Student and course content

Student and instructor

Student and student

We will discuss

  • Regular and consistent communication with students, ensured by setting up the course in a clear and consistent way.
  • Importance of scaffolded “pre-production” tasks as projects evolve: milestone assignments, such as thesis/draft/peer-review (each section graded)
  • Engaging quieter students: whiteboard; backchannel chat function, polls, etc.
  • Value of peer mentoring
  • How to facilitate group activities
  • Opportunities to seek feedback from students about how the course is going for them before the end (SEI): water cooler discussion section; midterm survey.
  • Many more topics!
