The museum invites students from all disciplines on campus to submit written responses to works from the permanent collection, on view in the museum’s Corridor Gallery during the Fall 2019 semester.   All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to participate.
Any form of writing will be accepted including poems, prose, brief dramatic scenes, song lyrics, other types of ekphrastic* work, short essays, or scientific explanations of thematic or material content. Length limit: 500 words.
A jury of museum and campus staff will select highlights from the submissions for a digital publication on the museum’s website.  The SDMA and sponsors will also host a public reading/performance at the museum in December for those selected.
Entries can be submitted here by Tuesday, November 5, 2019https://newpaltz.wufoo.com/forms/reading-objects-2019-student-edition/

Myra Mimlitsch-Gray, Pair of Spoons, 1992

As a university museum, we encourage the use of our exhibitions and collections by SUNY New Paltz students, staff, and faculty.  We believe that artworks can and should be used to promote conversation and to advance knowledge across the disciplines.
Sponsors: Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Writing Board, Faculty Development Center, Department of English, Department of Sociology, School of Fine & Performing Arts.
This campus community project is in memory of Professor Pauline Uchmanowicz (English) and Professor Peter Kaufman (Sociology) who both loved writing and who shared their lives generously with SUNY New Paltz students.
*for the purposes of this project, an ekphrastic work is writing inspired by art.

To the Faculty:
