The Legislative Gazette, in Albany, is seeking interns to serve as writers, photographers, copy editors, social media editors, podcast producers, and video content producers for the Spring 2025 semester. Scholarships are still available for qualified students.
Student reporters will cover live press conferences, interview state senators and Assembly members, watch oral arguments in the state Court of Appeals, report on the Governor’s budget, attend rallies and protests, and meet with issue advocates.
In light of the upcoming elections, student reporters will be producing articles and other media content on issues such as housing, mental health, public safety and gun control, climate change, minimum wage, and reproductive health laws.
In addition to covering the State Legislature, the Governor’s Office, and the State Budget, Gazette interns are also needed to work on the newspaper’s new podcast, produce video news segments, manage social media accounts and assist with the Hudson Valley Media Project – a collaborative project aimed at building relationships and sharing content with media and community partners across the Hudson Valley.
The Gazette’s Albany newsroom is equipped with new cameras and lenses, audio recorders, tripods, gimbals, lighting, microphones, mac books and other equipment needed for producing multi-media content in a busy news environment.
Prior knowledge of state government and politics is not required. This is a great opportunity to learn about professional news gathering and reporting, practice the skills you learned in the classroom, learn editing and news publishing techniques, social media strategies, and marketing and media management. Interns will work alongside journalists from news outlets such as The New York Times, The Associated Press, Politico, WAMC, The New York Post, Newsday, the Albany Times Union, and regional newspapers from across New York.
