Advising Checklist: Your Responsibilities
- Schedule an appointment with your major advisor. Go to my.newpaltz.edu > Semester Checklist to find your advisor’s name, contact info and office hours.
- Review your Progress Report and graduation requirements. This is your responsibility, not the advisor’s. In my.newpaltz.edu > Advising > Progress Report
- Wish to Study Abroad? Map out a plan to fit it into your progress toward graduation, by meeting with the SAB office, your major advisor and any relevant parties (Financial Aid, EOP advisor, etc.) Plan this as early as possible in your college career so you can reserve certain GE and elective courses for the semester abroad.
- Review the Schedule of Classes for DMJ (found at newpaltz.edu > Academics > Schedule of Classes > Subject: DMJ: https://www.newpaltz.edu/classes/ ) before meeting with your advisor. This way you’ll see all the course offerings, including special topics, guest lecturer courses, etc.
- Check prerequisites, minimum grades and any restrictions for the classes you plan to take by clicking on the CRN link in the Schedule of Classes (newpaltz.edu > Academics > Schedule of Classes > Subject: DMJ). If you do not have the appropriate prerequisites, you will be blocked from registering for that class. (Note: My Schedule Planner does NOT explain what the prerequisites and restrictions are for the classes — you must research them using the Schedule of Classes)
- Build your desired schedule in My Schedule Planner, found in my.newpaltz.edu> Registration> MySchedulePlanner. Choose several backups, in case your first choices fill. Tutorials are here.
- Meet with your advisor to review your Progress Report and major plan. You will be given a release to register online at your appointed time assignment. Your registration time assignment is found in my.newpaltz.edu > Registration > Time Assignment AND on your Checklist.
- Clear all holds before registration. If you have a hold on your account that will prevent registration, you will not be allowed to register at all – even if you have a “release” from your advisor. Here’s where to look for holds.
- Register for classes on your scheduled time assignment by going to my.newpaltz.edu > Registration > MySchedulePlanner and adding your preferred schedule into cart and selecting “Register.” Make sure to check course availability prior in case some courses have filled up.
