Media Studies Major Makes its Debut Fall 2024, Replacing Media Management Major

The Digital Media & Journalism Department is proud to announce the launch of the Media Studies major, available for student declarations in Fall 2024.

The major in Media Studies focuses on the history, impact, and content of mass media. The Media Studies 41-credit program aims to promote critical thinking and media literacy at all levels of media production and consumption. Our curriculum cultivates greater awareness of issues of diversity and representation in mass media and helps students develop the research and professional skills needed to succeed in today’s media industry. A broad selection of elective courses enables students to focus on specific areas of interest, while a required internship and a senior capstone experience provides students with hands-on experience creating, producing, and managing media content.

Here’s a look at the major on a Progress Report:

Of particular note, all courses required for the major are offered by the DMJ Department; there are no non-DMJ courses on the major plan. Also note the sequence of required courses: DMJ350 Media Research Methods is only taught in Fall while DMJ444, the senior Seminar in Media Studies, is only taught in Spring. Students should consult their advisors to plan their path to graduation.

The new major takes the place of Media Management (formerly Digital Media Programming & Management), which students can no longer declare. Current majors in Media Management will complete their degree as planned.

Each semester the DMJ Department updates its Advising Presentation — check it out: https://hawksites.newpaltz.edu/dmjnews/2024/03/12/fall-24-advising-powerpoint/
