Bilingual Interns Needed in Queens for Immigration Non-Profit CIANA

CIANA, the Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans, is getting ready for a new year and has some internship opportunities for the students at SUNY New Paltz. These opportunities include:

1) Digital Communications Internship 

2)Community Outreach Intern      

1) Digital Communications Intern

Purpose/Objective

The Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA), Communications and Outreach  team is looking for Communications Interns who are creative and detail-oriented self-starters. Chosen interns will form a team that possesses a combination of the skills outlined below. 

Location 

  • REMOTE

Key Responsibilities 

  • Draft posts for social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram 
  • Research, pitch, and draft articles for CIANA’s blog 
  • Assist the Communications and Outreach VISTA with producing newsletters and other emails  targeted at clients, donors, and partners 
  • Design graphics and visuals to enhance CIANA documents and materials 
  • Develop relations with media and community leaders/orgs 
  • Assist in translating the CIANA materials into Arabic, Bangla, or Spanish (if possible) Assist on side/independent projects 

Qualifications 

  • This internship is ideal for undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Communications, Marketing,  Graphic Design, Journalism, English, Political Science, Sociology, International Affairs, Latin  American/Middle Eastern/South Asian Studies, or related fields. 
  • An independent self-starter who can manage time effectively to accommodate several projects at once
  • Proficiency in Arabic, Bangla, Spanish, or other languages is a plus!  
  • Experience with one or more of the following: 
    • Research and writing 
    • Content creation for social media, blog posts, newsletters, and press briefings 
    • Graphic design 
    • Website design and analytics 
  • Familiarity with Canva, Mail Chimp, Wix, or similar platforms. Adobe Illustrator is a plus! 

Time Commitment 

  • Regular schedule required. 
  • 12 – 20 hours a week during CIANA office hours (Mon. – Fri. 10 AM – 6 PM). 

Compensation 

  • Unpaid, but may be completed for academic credit. 

Training/Support Provided 

  • Interns will undergo orientation and training.

2) Community Outreach Intern 

Purpose/Objective 

CIANA is looking for a friendly, passionate, and proactive Community Outreach Intern. CIANA’s Community Outreach efforts include assessing and generating awareness of the needs of the immigrant community in Queens, creating and delivering various workshop series in collaboration with our community partners to address these needs, and spreading the word about CIANA’s programs and services to the broader community and local institutions. 

Location 

  • Queens, NY, IN PERSON 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Distribute fliers, and table at events, fairs, and in various communities throughout Queens Communicate with and educate community members on the citywide initiatives such as Test &  Trace (T2), NYC CARE, and vaccinations 
  • Inform community members of CIANA’s various social services programs Complete general intake of new clients 
  • Conduct remote phone- banking when not conducting in-person community outreach Make phone calls to immigrant clients and/or potential clients 
  • Enter data into spreadsheets and maintain data in Google Sheets.  

Qualifications 

  • At least two years of college completed 
  • Fluency in Spanish or Bengali is required 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs 
  • Experience with community involvement and/or outreach
  • Public speaking and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Keen awareness of immigration news and issues impacting immigrant communities Occasional weekend and evening availability 
  • Comfortability with advocacy and mobilization 
  • Knowledge of Queens, its immigrant population, and related topics is a huge plus! 

Time Commitment 

  • Flexible schedule  
  • 10-15 hours per week 
  • Occasional weekend and evening availability.
