Children’s Poem & Song File

Your Children’s Poem & Song File should include songs / poems learned in our Reading I class, found in your fieldwork, or from any other source.

Please follow the following guidelines when preparing your file:

  • You may choose to develop your Children’s Poem & Song File digitally or in hard copy. Either way, be sure that you consider the presentation. For instance, if you present your file in a binder or book, make sure that 1) sections are clearly labeled and organized, and 2) you are able to continue to add to it over time (do not bind it, which makes it a permanent artifact).
  • Include all poems and songs shared in our class, at minimum. You should also include any others that you find in your travels this semester.
  • Tabs or categories should clearly separate your sections.
  • Your Table of Contents should provide a rationale for each of your categories or sections (i.e., if you have a group of poems labeled “beginning of the day,” explain how you might use poems in that section in a few sentences).
  • Add a simple illustration to each entry (hand-drawn or computer-generated are both equally acceptable).
  • If you are creating a hard copy binder or book, your poems and songs should be laminated or put in plastic sleeves for durability.
  • Remember: you are beginning a file that you will take with you into your first classroom and use with children. Make it fun and inviting!
  • You and a partner will present a song or poem during the second half of the semester. This presentation will count toward your participation/professionalism portion of your grade, and we will discuss presentation expectations in class.
