September 5 Scholarship Deadline For Fall Internships with Legislative Gazette; Zoom Meeting Slated Friday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m.

The Legislative Gazette is looking for intern reporters, photographers, video news producers, and media managers for the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semester. Several scholarships are available — for students to travel, for underrepresented students, and for those who can enroll full-time in the internship (12 credits) and the deadline is September 5. **An Information Session via Zoom will be held Friday, August 27 at 10 a.m. Plan to attend! Email Prof. James Gormley at: Gormleyj@newpaltz.edu for the Zoom link.

Interns will cover state news, and select local and national stories too, for the Gazette’s website and social media network. A team is also needed to plan and produce Gazette Talks, a new podcast that features Legislative Gazette reporters and special guests giving a behind-the-scenes look at how the news is made each week.

Student journalists will cover the governor’s press conferences, the state budget process, New York’s COVID response, and some of the bigger issues currently before state lawmakers such as: gun control, legalizing recreational cannabis, sports betting in New York, bail reform and criminal justice reform, environmental laws, housing, mental health, and more.

Prior knowledge of state government and politics is not required. This is a great opportunity to learn about professional news gathering and reporting, practice skills learned in the classroom, learn editing and news publishing, and learn more about social media strategies, marketing and media management, and issue advocacy.

Interns will also have the opportunity to work with community engagement expert Jeanne Brooks on collaboration projects with other reporters and newsrooms in the region.

  • Gazette interns can enroll for 1 – 12 credits, based on their need and availability (40 hours per credit)
  • Multiple scholarships are available for qualified students
  • Opportunities for fieldwork and covering live events
  • New cameras, mics, light kits, Macs and other equipment for Gazette staff
  • Transportation helpful for production interns to shoot events in your local region
  • There are limited opportunities for remote work for the Fall semester

**Students must have already been approved to earn internship credits through the department eligibility process (learn more here
