The SUNY New Paltz Department of Psychology invites you to participate in P.S. I Love You Day by wearing purple on Friday, Feb. 8 to bring awareness to suicide prevention. Here’s the description of it from the P.S. I Love You Day website:
P.S. I Love You Day is held every second Friday of February, making it February 8, 2019 this year. On this day we ask everyone to wear purple to stand up against bullying, help end depression, and ultimately prevent suicide. We hope that on this day you walk around your community, school, or work office and see a sea of purple. We hope that you hear nothing but positive messages that make you feel special, loved, and remind you, that you are never alone.
In addition to encouraging your participation is P.S. I Love You Day, below is a list of campus resources available to students experiencing psychological distress of any kind. Please spread the word and let’s work together to prevent suicide.

PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING CENTER

The Psychological Counseling Center (PCC) provides preventative and clinical services to the New Paltz campus community, to enhance a student’s ability to succeed academically and participate fully in the college experience. Group and individual psychotherapy, referral assistance, and emergency services are available for all currently-enrolled students. There is no charge for PCC services.
Students who utilize our psychotherapy services may discuss in confidence any worries, distressing feelings, or difficult situations they are experiencing. Our goal is to assist students as they navigate life’s challenges within the context of a rigorous and demanding academic environment.
How to Access Us
Call us at 845-257-2920 or walk in to the Student Health and Counseling Center building to make an appointment. Our regular business hours are Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our summer and winter recess hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our FAX number is 845-257-3162.
We provide scheduled appointments and brief emergency appointments daily. When mental health emergencies occur after-hours and on the weekends, contact the PCC “Emergency Contact for Student Consult” (ECSC) by calling the University Police Department (UPD) at 845-257-2222 and requesting assistance. UPD will contact the PCC “Emergency Contact” who will call you directly.
In the effort to secure clients’ privacy and confidentiality, the PCC does not use email as a mode of communication with students regarding treatment or appointments. All contacts with the PCC should be made by telephone or in person (walk-in). Please note that PCC staff does not monitor email on a 24-hour basis, and therefore strongly advise that those seeking assistance when there are safety concerns, contact the PCC via telephone or walk-in.

We are located in the Student Health and Counseling Center. It is the round building by the pond on Southside Loop Road, near Gage Hall. Find us on the campus map. Parking is provided for our clients in front of the building.
OASIS

OASIS is a student-staffed, crisis intervention center and telephone hot-line. OASIS volunteers are trained and supervised by the hotline Coordinator. Students may walk in or call the office.

OASIS offers confidential crisis intervention to help students deal with difficulties in life areas such as:
- suicide-related thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- depression
- relationships
- roommate hassles
- academic problems
- loneliness
Students also can call OASIS for information and referrals on:
- drugs and drug identification
- sexual issues and related diseases
- campus and community services
HAVEN

HAVEN is a student-staffed, crisis intervention center and telephone hot-line. Peer volunteers are specifically trained to respond to issues around rape, sexual assault, other unwanted sexual experiences and relationship violence. HAVEN volunteers are trained and supervised by the Hotline Coordinator. Students may walk in or call the office.

SUNY New Paltz students who wish to become peer volunteers should contact the Psychological Counseling Center at 845-257-2920 to inquire. A Crisis Intervention (PSY330) psychology course is required for hotline volunteers. The hotline is supervised by the PCC and has existed at the college since the early 1970s.

In an emergency, students should contact the University Police Department (UPD) at 845-257-2222 for immediate, direct campus response. Please note, calling 911 will connect you to external emergency services (Ulster County Emergency Services Department in Kingston, NY).
