Endell Street, London

endell street

Endell Street is from the Sherlock Holmes story of The Blue Carbuncle. The street itself doesn’t have much importance in the book because it was only used as a cut through area to get to another place, just like everyone does if they are trying to get somewhere faster. According to the British Online History site Endell Street was a commercial street. There was also a parish that closed and then donated money to the parish on Endell Street. As well as getting money from that parish they also got their church bells donated to them. The street didn’t have any effect on the plot of the story at all.

The rise and fall between cars and horse and buggies is that the rise of use of cars is far greater then the use of horse and buggy. When you drive a car is more convenient because a car is a dispensable item in which if a part in the car fails you can easily replace it. If there was something wrong with the horse and buggy its another story. Sure it is easy to fix the buggy but if something is wrong with the horse you have to find another one or have a veterinarian check it out, which could be more money. Another reason why the car was way more successful then the horse and buggy is because people care so greatly about their image in the view others in society. Also when it comes to cold weather you have to keep the horse or horses inside of a barn, while if you had a car you can just leave it outside. The use of horse and buggies died out because cars made things easier to transport items as well as more people. Horse and buggies were only meant to transport maybe one to two people and if lucky maybe three depending on the size of the buggy. When looking at the graph between cars and horse and buggy the cars has a constant increase with some drops. While the horse and buggy line looks like it is flat lining with little to no increase. What I saw for horse and buggy was surprising because there was a slight rise towards the end of the 1800’s going into the 1900’s. Aside from the horse and buggy people also rode the horses without the buggy attached but that required a great amount of skills as supposed to attaching the horse to the buggy.

Booktraces Marginalia M.I.A.

Finding a book that has marginalia truly is a test to me. Trying to find the book isn’t impossible because there definitely are books that have marginalia. I went through many types of books on my search to find such old writing in the books. Even with the help of the people in the library I wasn’t lucky enough to find them. All I was able to find was very old but very interesting old books that were bound at the spine by leather. The books also had leather covers depending on the book. The books that i found with writing were most likely from the early 1920’s because they had Coppertone writing style.

The type of books I was searching out were books that had designs on the spine, leather bound, books falling apart at the spine and the books that looked like they had bridge formation on the spine which held the book together. I also checked books that seemed quite likely to be old like Shakespeare, old dictionaries, books on the middle ages, poetry and very old art books. The only writing I could find in the books from the 1800’s were not letters but symbols like brackets to point out certain facts in the book and I found check marks randomly written in the books. Even though I wasn’t lucky enough to find books that contained marginalia I still had a great time looking through american past time books and seeing how different the book quality they made the books as to now. I also learned that just because the book may look old on the outside doesn’t always mean that it will have writing inside of it. As they teach you in school, never judge a book by its cover. When I think about that quote I think to myself this couldn’t be truer.

Advertising in the Victorian Era

From what I learned from the post made by Charles Dickens Jr. it appears to me that advertising was a great was to make money. The more you put into the advertisements the more money you can make at the end of the day. You can’t just put about $1000 and expect to make ten times the amount. The key to successful advertising wasn’t just the money you invested but the amount of time you spent to plan out things.
