Summer 2026 Internship – The Overlook Editorial

The Overlook is a nonprofit newsroom serving the Catskills communities of Hunter, Woodstock, Saugerties, Hurley, Olive, and Shandaken. Their mission is to provide rigorous independent journalism that informs, connects, and strengthens their region.

This position has hybrid flexibility in Woodstock for 15-20 hours per week PT / 35-40 hours a week FT. The internship is from May/June — August/September.

The Overlook is seeking motivated, curious, and enterprising summer interns with a passion for journalism. Interns will gain hands-on experience reporting, researching, and writing news and feature stories.

Responsibilities include:

  • Pitch, research, and write stories on local news, politics, arts, and community issues.
  • Conduct interviews with sources, including local officials, business owners, and residents.
  • Assist in fact-checking, copyediting, and digital content management.
  • Cover live events and public meetings as needed.
  • Work closely with The Overlook’s editorial team, receiving mentorship and feedback.

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing, research, and communication skills.
  • Interest in local journalism and community reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Some experience with AP style and news writing is preferred.
  • Photography and multimedia skills are a plus.
