If you’re a journalism student looking for hands-on experience tackling the ins and outs of local news, then apply for an internship with the Shawangunk Journal, an award-winning, independent news organization based in Ulster County, NY.

The Shawangunk Journal serves the towns of Wawarsing, Marbletown, Rochester, Rosendale, Crawford, Mamakating, Shawangunk, and everything in between. They are looking for journalism students ready to see first-hand what it takes to report on a local community in today’s climate. Interns will be expected to cover a variety of stories ranging from spot news, crime, housing, and town politics to human interest, local business profiles, artistic endeavors, news blurbs, and more. They’ll help you sniff out what’s newsworthy and what’s not, and get a sense of how both print and digital journalism works in the real world.

Interns will be expected to produce a variety of stories per week, working roughly seven hours each week. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with deadlines and be familiar with AP Style and basic journalistic ethics.

Interns can work from home, but may be expected to cover certain events in person as needed, and attend the Journal’s weekly editorial meeting. Additional one-on-one sessions between the writer and editor can be arranged upon request.
