Save the Date: Dasol Kim’s K-Beauty Project on Thursday 10/26!

The Liberal Arts & Sciences Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Colloquium Series presents Professor Dasol Kim’s K-Beauty Project: Deconstructing Erasure and Commodification. The presentation will take place on Thursday, October 26th from 4:00-5:30pm in the Honors Center.

Kim will be presenting her research on South Korean beauty culture and U.S. Imperialism. The presentation explores the intricate relationship between U.S. imperialism and South Korean beauty culture, focusing on trendy K-beauty discourse. It critically examines how K-beauty is marketed in the U.S, omitting the role of the U.S. in its history by enhancing its appeal to American audiences. To illuminate this complex interplay, this project unfolds in two distinct temporal ad geographical landscapes: K-beauty’s contemporary prominence in the 2020 U.S. market and its historical emergence in the post-war Korean era under the influence of U.S. military presence.
