Gabby:

While Doja Cat is probably an icon, when it comes to her being a supporter of all female rappers, like we saw in the last group’s presentation, she still is one of those rappers who people don’t know much about. My slides focus on who she actually is and what her contributions to changing up the industry are actually doing. Doja Cat got her come-up from her viral music video “MOOO!!”, a video that is poorly produced and has Doja Cat in a pretty silly

costume. However, there was so much more that Doja Cat has done before “MOOO!!” came out. She openly talks about how her life was growing up as ashram, leaving that to move into the suburbs and then finally moved to L.A., where she was able to freely create and grow musically. While there are many things that makes Doja Cat unique, interesting and relevant, she still has her moment where everything could’ve ended by a simple tweet cancelling her. Yet, fans and other audiences decided not to cancel her.

The reading that reminds me of why I picked Doja Cat in the first place is Joan Morgan’s Hip Hop Feminist. A lot of the work that Doja Cat is doing is in a hip hop feminist manner. She understands the pressures of sexism and misogyny that comes with the industry but does not accept or support the continuation. Just like Morgan states, “acknowledging the rampant sexism in our community, for example, means relinquishing the comforting illusion that black women and men are a united front,” we have to look at and analyze hip hop, and the people creating such content, from this lens without being overly critical  (Morgan 279). Doja does just this and so does the rest of the wonderful women we are presenting on.
