I think Hip Hop, particularly Hip Hop feminism, is a stellar example of the way feminist thought and praxis combine to fit the needs of the individuals it serves, especially when mainstream feminism (a.k.a white lady feminism) shows its exclusivity. 

I don’t think Hip Hop started as a subculture with the intention to push misogyny but I think when faced with the oppressive structures, it was easier to reassert masculine power when it is otherwise stripped away from your identity as a black or brown body. And of course women could not avoid being privy to the generation of a culture that celebrated blackness and spoke to the real issues faced by those who identified with blackness. To assume so, and to erase the contributions of black women to Hip Hop, is not only a great disservice but a perpetuation of the lack of importance of women in cultural revolutions. Women have bumped to music from men that want to keep them out, while also demanding space to keep bumping (and breaking).

I think the introduction to the Crunk Feminist Collective sums it ups best: “Hip Hop generation feminism does not justify bad behavior. It works from the proposition that Black women and girls get to be authors of their own lives, be they good, bad, or ugly. And hip hop feminism respects that authority, and the importance of being able to articulate, and live one’s life on one’s own terms.”

The work done by every woman in Hip Hop, be she a rapper, a b-girl, a DJ, or grafitti grrl, she is doing feminist work. To actively take place and demand a voice in a space that tries to shut you out is inherently feminist work; even their rejection of mainstream white feminism is active, as it calls out racist systems within the structure. You don’t have to use the term to practice the theory.
