I chose the Poem “Black Is” because I felt it connected to the entire reading, from the very beginning. On page 13 and 14 the author writes, “Rap’s young creators have located a cultural voice that is both an adaptation to and a departure from earlier voiced of nationalism and black unity politics. … It [hip-hop] is a departure inasmuch as the dialog between generations and between different classes of African-Americans if often strained, reflecting the extent to which evolving social and cultural conditions of existence often result in divergent rather than convergent cultural strategies.” Black, Blackness, being Black. It’s not one person’s point of view. “Black is so terrible, it’s terrifying… Black is the old lady’s grandchildren… Black is so beautiful, it makes you cry”
