Many SWW-ESL/ELL Composition students at SUNY New Paltz have come through the Haggarty English Language Program. Here are some facts from the college website about the program:
The Haggerty English Language Program (HELP), which delivers high quality English language instruction to speakers of other languages, will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2019.
- The English as a Second Language Program has enrolled students from nearly 70 different countries.
- The Program was approved by the U.S. government as one of the first ESL programs in America to receive Pathway Program status.
- Faculty include the past President of New York State TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language), the NYS TESOL Teacher of the Year, a published ESL/EFL textbook author and a number of NYS TESOL Members of the Month.
- Our faculty are active in the TESOL International Association and make pedagogical presentations at state and international professional conferences.
According to the campus’ 2017 Student Profile (the most recent year), our international students came from: Aruba, Brazil, Chile, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sri Lanka, St Vincent & Grenadine, Turkey and Viet Nam.
However, not all SWW-ESL/ELL students are international students. Some have been placed into ESL/ELL courses because they are recent immigrants, who attended one or more years of high school in the United States. Their experience in US secondary schools may make them fairly comfortable with academic essay structures, even if they have not yet mastered essay writing.
