Literacy Team Updates for Fall

We hope everyone had an amazing summer and that you all are doing well as you gear up for the fall semester to start next Monday! In the meantime, we wanted to share a few program updates with you:

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Kate Misar to the faculty as a new Assistant Professor of Literacy Education this fall. We are so excited for her to be joining the Literacy team! She can’t wait to work with you all as you learn and grow as literacy leaders.

Dr. Sunny Duerr will be joining the Literacy team as the new Program Coordinator. Dr. Duerr has been working closely with the Literacy Education program for years, and we are so lucky to have him stepping into this role as we start a new academic year!

Professor Maura Musso will serve as the Academic Advisor for all candidates for the fall semester. Many of you know Professor Musso from the undergraduate Early Childhood / Childhood Education program, and we are thrilled to have her serving in the role of advisor! She will be in touch as registration for spring approaches.

Dr. Kathleen Lord has officially retired from SUNY New Paltz and we wish her well in her future educational endeavors and scholarly pursuits! She wishes you the best of luck in your future work and knows you will positively impact the lives of so many students in the future. Dr. Lord has enjoyed working with you so much.

Dr. Kiersten Greene will be on medical leave during the fall semester and will really miss working with you and the program! Dr. Duerr and Professor Musso will be your main points of contact for questions about the program and advising from here on out.

BEST WISHES for the start of the new school year! We cannot wait to see the amazing things you will accomplish!!!

Two Opportunities

We hope everyone’s spring semester wound down smoothly. And CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATES!!!

Please see the below links for two opportunities that might interest you:

TEACHING TO TRANSGRESS SUMMER INSTITUTE: This summer Dr. Robyn Sheridan and Dr. Asilia Franklin-Phipps want to invite you to a short summer intensive around critical issues in education. Through reflection, art, music, and discussion we would like to collaborate and create space to inquire and consider urgent issues impacting education. Find out more HERE.

HUDSON VALLEY WRITING PROJECT EARLY CAREER INSTITUTE: This is an amazing opportunity for early-career teachers (within the first five years of your career) to develop and enhance your teaching writing and leadership skills. Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year are being accepted now. Find out more HERE.

Registration for Summer & Fall 2023

Greetings Literacy Candidates! This email contains information about registration for Summer & Fall 2023:

  • Registration for Summer AND Fall begins tomorrow, April 10th.
  • Check (and double check!) your plan of study for the courses you need to take. Please note: some changes may have been made in the last week due to an unusually high number of new candidates enrolling and some shuffling of seats that needed to happen.
  • You will require permission to register for some (but not all) courses — you can see which courses require permission by clicking on the blurb in the Schedule of Classes.
  • You should have received automated emails about permissions you’ve been given over the last two weeks.
  • If for some reason you have not been given permission for a class that you believe you need, please get in touch with Dr. Greene asap.
  • Dr. Greene will be responding to email requests as quickly as humanly possible. But please be patient — as a reminder, on top of being the only advisor in Literacy right now, they are also the literacy coordinator and department chair. If you don’t hear back right away, rest assured you will hear back!
  • Do not reach out to the instructor for permission to register — when in doubt about what to register for, check your plan of study.
  • Lastly, if you have been given permission to register for LED753-03 and LED754-03, there is an error in the dates and you may not be able to register for both until it is a fixed. The Registrar is aware of the issue and is working as fast as they can to fix it.

We are so excited to continue our work with you and can’t wait to welcome our new candidates to the program!!1

To those of you graduating: we can’t wait to celebrate you in May!!!

Dean’s Student Advisory Council Invitation

Please see the below invitation from Interim Dean Isabelle:

Dear Students,

The Dean’s Office in the School of Education is pleased to announce the creation of a School of Ed (SOE) “Dean’s Student Advisory Council.” I would like to form a council of diverse students from our undergraduate programs in Early Childhood/Childhood Education and Adolescence Education and our graduate programs to provide advice and feedback to me concerning matters including School-wide initiatives and events, coursework/field experiences, and other relevant issues of interest. Students who volunteer should be interested in collaborating with other students to provide the Dean with feedback about their experiences in the School and enhance the sense of community and belonging in the SOE. This group should be committed to working together to make the School better by having their voices heard. The Advisory Council will meet remotely once a month starting in the spring 23 semester at an agreed upon meeting time and membership will be reassessed at the beginning of each fall semester.

If you are interested in being part of this council, please complete the Student Interest Form by Friday, November 11:

I hope you will consider this unique opportunity. As Interim Dean, I encourage your involvement in the School and value your thinking.

Prof. Aaron Isabelle

Interim Dean and Professor, School of Education

Certification

As a reminder, you can find information on certification at the “Certification Questions?” link on our website (under the Advising tab in the menu).

At the “Certifications Questions?” link, you’ll find step-by-step instructions on how to apply for certification, as well as a link to the NYSTCE study materials for the CST.

If you are graduating next year, you should be receiving (if you haven’t already) an invitation for an FAQ session with our Certification Advisor, Chris Whitaker. If you are unable to attend or have individual questions about your certification pathway, check out this link on the New Paltz website which includes information on how to make an appointment with Chris.
