In an essay or through a public outreach project, students will write about/act upon the liberation potential of and in Hip Hop Culture.
Essay Guidelines (individually written):
- Compare two contemporary case studies where Hip Hop Culture is being used for feminist liberation projects in an 8-10-page research paper.
- To analyze the two case studies, students will use at least 2 of the readings we’ve covered in class in addition to a minimum of 2 outside sources.
- Submit a properly formatted (header, works cited, citations, etc.) hard copy in class on the final exam day.
Public Outreach Project Guidelines (ideally completed with your crew):
- Public outreach projects may take various forms: a performance, a protest, a video, a painting, a fundraiser, an information campaign, or sculpture, etc.
- Crews who opt to complete a public outreach project must receive permission from the instructor at least two weeks before the last week of classes!
- Public outreach projects are to be submitted along with a three-page reflection paper describing how the project illustrates Hip Hop’s feminist liberation potential. Each student in the crew must submit their own reflection. Public outreach projects must have a public component to them! In other words, you have to have received some kind of feedback, interaction, or participation. Students have to record live events.
