These last few episodes of The Get Down has been kind of wild. From Mylene singing on live TV to Boo-Boo selling drugs, there has been a lot of influence that music and money has had over individual characters. Yet, I want to focus more on how Mylene’s career at Marrakesh Star Records is a little alarming. When making the decision of having Mylene sing “Toy Box” instead of Misty Holloway. The way Roy describes Mylene being perfect for the song is by referring to her breasts. This connects with Tricia Rose’s chapter on how hip hop is not responsible for sexism in the industry, record companies and the people who run these record companies are. Rose states, “Mass media corporations profit extensively from promoting sexism and this is why they remain so quiet, letting rappers take the heat,” perfectly exemplifying how easily it was to manipulate Mylene and Papa Fuerte into having Mylene portray an image that she was not ready for (155).The simple fact that Roy completely goes against how Mylene wanted to stay relatively true to her religious background, as brought up by Shane, also reinforces how strong of a pull record companies hold over their artists and even on their own staff. While a lot of things are sold through sex, music and sex go hand in hand. Album Covers, music videos, song lyrics and delivery all tend to focus on sex and the how much the artist can sell based on aspects like looks.
