I felt as though the reading “It’s Just Begun” related the most to The Get Down. In the Get Down, Zeke was both Puerto rican and Black, his friends were Black and together created a movement of unity. In episodes 4 and 5, the setting took place when the crime rate increased after the power outage. This was a time when hip hop was needed the most, it was needed to bring people together and a way for them to express their frustrations with the world. Davey D, emphasized the point that Blacks and Puerto Ricans lived next to each other and “… for the most part experienced the same urban problems”.  This makes me think of how the issues that the boys faced in The Get Down brought them together to create the bond they have. “The South Bronx, on the contrary, seems to have been one of the most active spots of joint cultural activity between African- Americans and Puerto Ricans…” Connecting this to The Get Down, their idea and push for unity portrays this ideology that was very prevalent in the South Bronx during the late 70’s and 80’s. 

In the chapter of Graffiti Grrlz, “Re-Membering Herstory and the Transephemeral Performative”, the idea of digital comes to life. I learned about what re-membering actually stood for, the idea that hip hop can be shared and the interpretation can evolve over time. An example of this would be seeing a piece of art for the first time via the web and thinking it was from current day, when in actuality it was from years ago. This idea of graffiti is different from the way it is in the Get Down. In the Get Down, Dizzee would risk it all to create his art on trains. The man he was involved with even got arrested for spraying the trains late at night. It made me think about how the culture of hip hop has evolved over time. Instead of creating a piece and it beng first come first serve, artists can save their work forever via the internet.
