In The Get Down the 4th and 5th episodes we can see how almost every character Ezekial (getting offered to internships) , Myelene(singing), Shaolin(wanting to make music) etc is trying to use hip-hip to get out of their hometown. They are given the opportunities to try to get out of the Bronx. The entire scene in episode 5 where they sing together I feel is also a message to work together as a community using hip-hop. Hip hop can be used as storytelling that is what I think The Get Down does is to show how people can come together with one thing and make a better community or start to work. Showing the characters in the show how hard they are working to get to their dream or get out of something to make themselves better. In the reading Kuttner and Hammond talk about how that people are blaming hip-hop on black youth culture. When it is not doing that at all. The PHH are helping young people to be cultural leaders and helping them understand oppression or power. “ We are not arguing at all, or even most, hip hop art needs to be explicitly political. It should be diverse, eclectic, and multi-vocal as the communities from which it emerges.” (Page 55). The article at the end talks about how there is groundwork to be done and and hip hop culture should help.
