Hip Hop is full of misogyny and feminism was always seen as the “white women thing” and obviously racist. The two challenge one another in some ways: Hip Hop challenges feminism to focus on things that weren’t part of the original feminist movement including but not limited to black women and the hatred of them; known as misogynoir which comes out of The Stage Hip Hop Feminism Built; pg 730. Feminism challenges Hip Hop to focus on things like sexism and how rampant it is in the genre. Black women can be feminists and still defend black men to white people.

The two of them come together to create the people that call themselves Hip Hop Feminists. Hip Hop Feminists created what is called SOLHOT (from Black Girlhood Celebration reading) and it focuses on giving women of color a space where they can come together to create change in their communities. It’s important for women of color to have that space to create change because without it, change wouldn’t take place. Hip Hop Feminists (referring mostly to Morgan in Hip Hop Feminist) want a feminism that is “committed to ‘keeping it real'” (281) and that makes complete sense because what the hell would be the point if they didn’t keep it real? How would real change be created if these Hip Hop Feminists didn’t keep it real?
