She Is by The Last Poets ties to the Forman reading about space/location in a slightly abstract, yet also very concrete way. This song/poem states cities and places where Black culture, where “she”, the music, the rap, the poems, the beats, the art ~ lives and breathes and grows. Places like the Missisippi Delta, St Louis, Chicago, even all the way back to Africa, this song chronicles a history of music as it relates to people of color all the way to the present day. The music, from Jazz to Be-Bop to Hip Hop, has evolved due to the urban landscape/SPACE of these places and I’m sure each city mentioned had it’s own unique contributions to the birth of hip hop due to the specific youth/culture that was there during that time. In general, this song really spoke to me and I’m grateful to have discovered it.
