The Times Union is Now Hiring Paid Interns for Summer 2023

The Times Union is now hiring interns for summer 2023. If you have questions, please contact editor in chief Casey Seiler at cseiler@timesunion.com.

The Times Union is the leading news organization in New York’s Capital Region and is widely respected for its focus on local news and watchdog reporting, particularly on state government and politics. They’ve won numerous state and national awards for their work and in 2022 were named a Newspaper of Distinction by the Journalists Association of New York.

Interns are paid and treated as regular newsroom staff members, learning on the job and helping to produce the Capital Region’s best news coverage.

The internship lasts eight weeks; specific start and end dates are somewhat flexible. They offer internships in reporting — news, sports, business and/or features — and audience engagement. Interns will be assigned an editor, will participate in team meetings and may join training sessions on topical subjects. When applying, please note which position you’re interested in.

Interns are expected to be located in the Capital Region or Hudson Valley for the duration of the internship and must be able to drive to assignments. They reimburse mileage. The newsroom works in a hybrid environment, so staff can either work from home or in the office space.

Interns must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university, or have graduated within the past year, at time of application.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Students enrolled in a journalism concentration.
  • Experience working at a college publication, either print or online.
  • A previous internship or freelance experience at a daily newspaper or professional news website.

The application deadline for the summer 2023 internship is Feb. 10. Applicants will be notified of the internship committee’s decision by no later than Feb. 24.

Interns are paid $15 an hour and will work 37.5 hours a week. The internship is eight weeks; start and end dates can be flexible. Interns must be based in the Capital Region or Hudson Valley or be able to move to the region for the internship. Interns cannot freelance or work at other publications during the internship unless approved by a supervisor.

To apply, submit a cover letter, resume and three references through our form.

Reporting candidates should include links to or PDF copies of five published work samples. Audience candidates also may attach work samples. Please include any good work you’ve done — even if it doesn’t fit the “traditional” mold.

When writing your cover letter, think about:

  • Why you wish to intern for the Times Union.
  • What you are interested in doing during your internship.
  • Your goals and expectations for the internship.
  • What makes you the best candidate.
  • The dates you are available.

Selection will be based on portfolio, experience (college and professional), cover letter and references. Finalists will be interviewed.

The Times Union is committed to growing and retaining a more diverse workforce that better reflects the communities we serve. We strongly encourage all people of working age who are traditionally underrepresented in the media to apply, including women, people of color, applicants with disabilities, those from the LGBTQ+ community and veterans.

All students, including new incoming students, should complete the General Application and if prompted a Conditional Application for the upcoming aid year starting March 1, 2023, and for all other available scholarship opportunities for the 2023-2024 aid year.

All currently enrolled students may sign into SUNY New Paltz Foundation’s Scholarship Portal with your newpaltz.edu email and password.

HOW TO APPLY

Your first step is to complete a General Application. Your responses may prompt a request for you to complete a Conditional Application or recommend opportunities with additional scholarship specific questions.

Look over these scholarships to see if you are eligible and then apply to eligible opportunities. For existing students, it is strongly recommended that you do not rely exclusively on the system’s auto-match and the populated Recommended Opportunities. Many scholarships require additional information to be submitted after the completion of the General Application.

Go to OPPORTUNITIES and then click on the “Ours” tab to see the full list of scholarships opportunities. Please read the scholarship descriptions carefully to determine if you might qualify for any additional scholarships.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Most of the Foundation’s Scholarships opportunities are open for application between March and April for funding for the next academic year. Some dates will vary for specific opportunities, so please check when applying.

The General Application will open in January and close on December 15 @ 11:59 pm. EST. Once it is completed during this cycle, you can edit but you do not have to take this step again.

Edits to existing and closed opportunity applications will not be accepted after the scholarship’s stated deadline. Deadlines are 11:59 PM on the posted date. All application materials, including reference letters must be submitted on time to be considered.

HOW TO SEARCH

Click on the “Show Filters” button to find opportunities by certain attributes, majors, or other scholarship themes. You may search on more than one scope by highlighting one option, holding down “control” or “command” and then highlighting an additional option. Click “Enter” when finished. It is strongly recommended that all students review the GENERAL scholarship category. These funds are not reliant upon a student being a specific major.

Keyword searches should be limited to one word or phrase (ex. engineering). Do not use comma separators or unrelated strings (ex. math, physics; arts and sciences political science).

AWARDING

If you are selected as a scholarship recipient, you will receive an email from npscholarships@newpaltz.edu. This email will provide you the steps you will need to take for the scholarship to be applied to your student account. All email notifications will be sent to your newpaltz.edu email account. If you wish to confirm offers without clicking on a link in an email, please log into the scholarship portal and accept offers from there.

Additional steps will need to be taken to confirm your scholarship. All students will need to complete the acceptance process in the scholarship portal if prompted.

Qualifying for a scholarship is not a guarantee of funding. Even if not specifically stated, scholarships are typically reserved for students in good academic standing who are also making satisfactory progress towards a degree. International students can apply for all scholarship opportunities except where permanent residency in the US is noted.
