Journalism Students! Attend this Webinar on Student Reporter Safety

Threats Against Journalists are proliferating in the United States. In 2023, the U.S. ranked 45th on the World Press Freedom Index, down from 32nd just a decade ago.

They are hosting a 90-minute online training tailored for student journalists. The webinar is hosted and facilitated by Jennifer Karchmer, an independent journalist and 1991 graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications. The webinar will cover a variety of safety topics including risk assessment, pre-planning and newsgathering best practices for reporting on elections, rallies, and protests. Jennifer will be joined by Jeff Belzil, security director at the International Women’s Media Foundation, who will discuss security protocols, contingency planning, police tactics, personal protective equipment, and more.

The webinar is free; but registration is required. Maximum number of attendees is 50, so reserve your space early.
