Teaching Philosophy

Becoming and remaining an effective teacher of students of all ages requires continuous learning of subject matter, pedagogy, and assessment techniques.  Reflection on teaching and students’ reactions to instruction are also imperative in a successful teaching career.  As a teacher educator, I embody these principles and I model effective instruction and assessment for the teacher and specialist candidates with whom I work.  Because undergraduate and graduate education students are learning content and developing their own teaching skills and philosophies, I ensure that the content I teach and methods I use are current, evidence-based, and relevant to the contexts within which the students will apply all they learn.  Furthermore, I believe community and relationship to be at the heart of teaching and learning, and enjoy fostering this in my courses each semester.
