In Progress Laser Cut Bookmarks

Laser Cut Bookmark Lesson Plan-1v44gi0

My final project is a lesson on laser cutting and how to use a free digital drawing program called Inkscape. Using these the students will be assigned to make a bookmark. The lesson will be in collaboration with their english teacher and will encourage the students to realize the connection between art making and literature.

I started by making the designs on my Ipad. Students will have the choice of drawing directly in the Inkscape program, using an Ipad if they have one or any other digital drawing tool or they can draw it on paper and scan it.

Then I brought the designs into Inkscape to vectorize them and image trace, the same way that we did in illustrator, although the file did not work with the laser cutter in the DFL. I will have to look deeper into it if i use Inkscape in the lesson plan because to get them to print i had to bring them into illustrator to export it in a way that the laser cutter could read it.

Here are the final designs that I came up with

6 Thoughts.

  1. Not only are you incorporating technology into art but you’re introducing a new program, Inkscape which I’ve never heard of before. It is great to show students that there are more digital programs out there than the typical Adobe suite. Your bookmarks came out great! And collaborating with the English teachers is a great idea, it spreads your influence even more.; maybe kids will be more into reading after making these fun book marks. Art projects are fun but are even better when you get to use what you made. Great work!

  2. your bookmarks came out fantastic number one, number two, i love the idea of using an app like inkscape thats widely available to everyone, I really hope you work out how to get it to work with the laser cutter but its still a great resource to know about, if you cant, maybe an underfunded school would have at least a few computers with illustrator that it can be exported from. either way its a great resource for students to work with at home who dont have illustrator (like me) but still want to learn these skills!

  3. I love your overall concept! I really like how you are thinking about collaborating on this project with an English teacher and pushing students to draw cross-sectional connections. It’s also great how you are using a free digital drawing program too, not all schools will necessarily have Adobe programs, so finding another more accessible program as an alternative is a great idea. Your designs are also lovely and seem very thoughtful and worked on!

  4. 😲!! I love these bookmarks!! I think it’s super cool that you have the idea of collaborating with an English teacher, as some people don’t realize literature/poetry is a form of art. I also super like this idea because students always have at least one piece of literature they adore, and making an art piece inspired by it really brings it to life and may even inspire an art student to love reading or an English student to love art! Or if they like both, then it’s just a win win 🙂 I love your use of using a free program because so many schools don’t have the funding to afford something like the entire adobe suite. Super cool work and I can’t wait to see them in person!

  5. Even though the project didn’t transfer to the laser cutter in the DFL from inkscape I did find a website ponoko.com (I’ve never used it so I can’t vouch for it) put it lets you create in inkscape upload your design from inkscape to the website and it creates it for you and sends it to you. Of course I don’t know pricing wise what it costs and it may not be feasible but if you still want to do the project in the future using inkscape I would check that out!
This lesson is great and I really appreciate your innovative and considerate way of thinking about what resources would be available for the students and collaborating with another teacher always enhances a lessons strength in my opinion, good job! I’m so happy to see how these came out

  6. I love this project idea! I think it is extremely important for students to be able to make connections between art and other courses. Incorporating english and literature classes especially give students a unique opportunity to create visual images based on how they interpret characters and settings.
I understand how frustrating it must have been for you when you did all that work in inkscape and the printing failed, but trial and error is a huge part of the art making process and you made it work! The final products turned out so well and your designs were beautiful!
I also think it is awesome that you created the product using a free program to the lesson is more accessible to schools who may not have the funds for Photoshop or Illustrator.
You did an all around great job on this project! you should be very proud(:
