The Critical Pedagogy Study Group, formed in spring 2017 in the School of Education, invites SUNY New Paltz community members to read, think, debate, invent, create, and consider the ways in which we teach and learn for equity and inclusivity, whether it’s in a K-12 or higher education setting.
Critical pedagogy invites a political-economic, anti-racist, and structural analysis of teachers’ daily work, and helps educators and scholars actively consider ways in which to put critical social theory into practice in the classroom.
All spring 2019 meetings will take place at 12:00-1:30 on the following Wednesdays — note the meeting locations:
- February 6:
- Discussion of James Baldwin’s A Talk to Teachers | held in 1907 Room in Old Main
- Screening and discussion of Teach Us All | CSB Auditorium | 6:00-8:30pm
- February 20: Cancelled due to weather and scheduling conflicts
- March 6: Discussion of Broderick, A. A., & Leonardo, Z. (2016). What a Good Boy. DisCrit-Disability Studies and Critical Race Theory in Education, 55-67 | Discussion led by Michael Smith | OM 322
- April 3: TBD | OM 113
- April 17: Topic TBD | Discussion led by Shannon McManimon | OM 113
The format of the group has been flexible up until this point — sometimes we’ve discussed articles; sometimes we’ve thought out loud about how to concretely bring theory into practice in the classroom; sometimes we’ve listened to and provided feedback on each other’s research process. We will decide at the first meeting as a collective what this semester’s focus will be.
