The East-West Living & Learning Community (EWLLC) provides domestic students studying Chinese and Japanese languages and cultures and students from China, Japan, and South Korea a wonderful opportunity to live together in a residence life setting. The QR code for applying is at the bottom of this post.
As a side note, a Beginning Korean course is being offered in Fall 2024. It’s the first time this language has been offered at New Paltz! Tell your friends, and consider taking it even if you have already taken Chinese or Japanese.
The EWLLC creates an ideal environment for you to practice your language skills and learn about other cultures. Throughout the academic year, you and your fellow Community members will plan and execute events and activities that highlight Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean culture such as a film series, guest speakers, performances, exhibits, presentations, website development, a newsletter, off-campus cultural tours, special meals and cuisine, calligraphy, etc.
Participation in the Community provides excellent preparation for students who will study abroad in China, Japan or South Korea. Students returning from study abroad are also invited to join the Community so that they can maintain their language skills.
Living in the Community gives students from China, Japan, and South Korea the opportunity to make friends with American students and learn about American student life.
Your home at SUNY New Paltz
The Community is located in the recently renovated Ashokan Hall, and the space dedicated to the Community consists of 3 suites with 9 bedrooms rooms to accommodate 16 students and a Resident Mentor.
Ashokan Hall has excellent facilities for the Community, including kitchens, and common areas with various technological enhancements such as computer stations and a new large television.
The Community hosts many of its events in Ashokan Hall, and these activities are open to other student groups with an interest in Asian languages and cultures.
Ashokan is a 10-month hall so that international students will be able to stay in their rooms over the various breaks.
