I wanted to make a card for my Aunt, she’s done so much for me and also her birthday is next month. Sunflowers are her thing, and it’s one of the things that come to mind when I think of her. As far as far as circuits and lights adding meaning to an image/object, in this case I think it’s almost like saying “you brighten up my life”.
My first circuit ended up too big for the flower I made, and it also only had spots for three lights. So, as one does in design thinking, I ideated and prototyped again. I cut out the battery holder and sketched out a new circuit. I remade the circuit, this time small enough and with spots for 4 lights, and taped the battery holder onto the card. I then went to incorporate my switch by adding a break to my circuit, and then a tab/flap as shown below. I struggled a bit figuring out how I would attach the flower, and then ended up cutting up adhesive strips and stacking the small pieces up, and then sticking the flower onto it.
This project connected to my prior knowledge by incorporating the countless times I’ve made cards for other people, but now with the additive element of circuits. It also connects to art in the sense of making something that has a purpose/meaning (expression).
In my future classroom, I would like to incorporate the idea of using materials to create meaning, which is something I think a work should always have anyway because it adds depth and encourages the viewer to think and analyze the work. I also like the idea of having students make something for someone; I think it definitely makes the project more engaging and personal, as well as promotes brainstorming of ideas.

I love the way the lights flicker. I think using the yellow light and the idea of sunshine was a great idea. I can tell how much your aunt means to you and this is a beautiful tribute. I really like the way you were able to make the flower a little accessory on the card rather than just laying flat. I also like the way that the yellow lights flicker, It reminds me of the sun going behind clouds and coming back out. The colors go really well together and it just gives me a warm and happy feeling. Good job!
