How can simple circuits add meaning to an image?
I think the addition of a circuit to the card made it so much more personal. Opening the card and seeing the light is like when you realize an art piece in a museum is interactive. It makes the creation seem much more alive and thoughtful.
What did you learn? Describe your learning process. What was most challenging? What was most fun?
I learned a lot about design through this project. I really had to play around and prototype a lot to get my design to be fully functional. I wanted to add more lights but it was difficult to place them. I decided it was best for a cleaner look by adding one colored light to light up the potion. I think the best part of this project was making the card specific to my little cousin. It made me collect images of us together and craft a theme I know she likes. She is really into magic fairies and potions, and adding my own creativity to it was very fun. There were so many different ideas that I went through to get my final. I wanted to have a pop-up in my project, but I was not able to incorporate the light into it. Editing is always the most challenging part of what you want in your final.
How did this activity connect (or not) to your prior knowledge of art and art education? How might you use and/or adapt this activity in an art classroom?
I think this project was relatively new. The projects leading up to this one felt like preparation. After learning how the circuit works last time, it was fun to see what directions everyone was taking.
I really loved seeing all the different ideas and how everyone set themselves apart in this project. Your idea to include a “magical” bottle really connected to the idea of making it personal and meant for the person we were giving it to. I think as a teacher, your attention to what kids like and encouraging their imaginations will really help them strive in the classroom.
