Citings/Sightings for October 2nd

This week was centered around the concept of sources, specifically creating, sharing, and responding to sources. At various points throughout the class, we discussed and engaged with notions of “rewriting,” being writers in conversation with other writers, and identifying “fake news.” We started class by mixing things up a bit with our usual DEN homework responses; Professor Sawyer had us all “write into the day” by working with Harris’ notion of “rewriting.” Instead of meeting in small groups to discuss our DENs/writings, we sat in a large circle as a class and shared our responses to our chosen quotations. Later in class, we worked on adding to our definitions of fake news based upon new sources (two videos and several articles) provided to us. We watched a couple of videos on the dangers of fake news sources, and ways to both identify them and prevent the spread of them (especially on social media). Pictured below is part the class viewing the TED-Ed video “How to Choose Your News” and working on their “note catchers” (my own pictured on the right) to identify problems and solutions pertaining to fake news.
