Digging Deeper:
M: So, tell me why history? What intrigues you about the subject?
R: For me history is so much more than what you learn about in high school. It’s not just memorizing dates and facts. History encompasses everything. It is the story of humanity, of science, of math, of literature.
M: Would you say that history is the story of how we have come to be who we are today?
R: Yes, a story or a narrative. The fun part is looking critically at all the pieces of the puzzle, deciding which narrative makes the most sense to you, and creatively arguing your perspective. That is why I love history.
M: I see here that you are an avid museum goer. What makes museums so special?
R: When I was a child my family would take long road trips across the country to visit family. To break up the drive we would stop at museums and historical places. I always found museums to be fascinating. For me museums are a physical 3D representation of those narratives. I love how they are organized so that every visitor can choose to skim them quickly or spend hours going in depth and digging deeper into the story.
M: In this digital age that we live in, how can we encourage younger generations to visit museums?
R: I think the best way for people to appreciate museums and all they have to offer is to get out and visit them. I am a big advocate of class field trips. As educators we should take children to museums, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which offer a wide variety of exhibits and let the students explore what they are passionate about. There are also a ton of great free local museums that I encourage everyone to take advantage of.
