This week we expanded on last week’s process of seeing ourselves as writers by first pondering what we learned about ourselves and our lives during the experience of writing our “About Me” pages. Later, we transitioned from writing about ourselves to writing about someone else and having someone else write about us–a different, though still highly personal experience–by interviewing partners for the creation of profile pieces modeled on Ana Marie Cox’s “Lisa Lucas Wants to Make Reading Fun Again.” Along the way, however, we shared our “About Me” drafts with small groups and received feedback for revision. When asked what it was like discussing revisions for such personal pieces in small groups, the responses ranged from feeling “safe” and “supportive” to offering critiques for future consideration (e.g. sharing concerns for revision with the group to provide readers with more specific focus). All in all, this week we continued to become more comfortable sharing ourselves and our writing with others, which we must continue to do if we are going to expect our students to do as well.
