What worked for you?
When I deleted little bits of text from random areas.
Focus Question: How is data bending similar/different from other art making processes?
I think Data bending is similar to art making processes because sometimes you aren’t sure what the outcome will be. Also different artists have different techniques and in art you can tell other artists about your work, which inspires them. This is similar to data bending because our class mates would try something, say how they did it, and then we would all use that information in our own data bends.
What did you learn? Describe your learning process. What was most challenging? What was most fun? (.5 points)
I learned that deleting large chunks of text ruined (made everything black) the photo…another way to damage the photo was to change one specific symbol or word towards the top. It corrupted the file and I had to start all over again. I struggled to find my own style and do different things with the images. These were the challenging parts. I also learned that deleting very small bits of text changed the image in a positive way, and it did something different every time, whether it changed the color or the position of the image. I liked when this happened the most.
How did this activity connect (or not) to your prior knowledge of art and art education? (.25 points) How might you use and/or adapt this activity in an art classroom? (.25 points)
I had some knowledge that data bending existed because I would sometimes see pictures that were bended on instagram or other social media. Other than that I hadn’t known of the process or exactly how to do it so i’m glad that I learned. For the classroom you could figure out some code & how it works in more detail and show your kids that different keystrokes/deleting/copy pasting/etc. do different things.
Which are your favorites and why?
My favorites are the fifth one and the 9th one. I really like the dark colors in the 5th and the effect I got really looked “glitchy”. I like that I repeated myself in the 9th one and I also like all the colors together, they look like a gradient.
