You may have been hearing “ADA Title II” a lot lately, and this is because updates in 2024 brought the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into the digital age.  The ADA, which was first signed into law in 1990, now has specific guidelines and standards for web and mobile technologies. Many of these technologies would have felt like science fiction in the 1990’s, but they are now a necessary part of our daily lives and critical pathways to information and services!

Entities covered under the ADA (which includes all SUNY campuses) need to ensure that they are not excluding individuals with disabilities from accessing digital programs and services.  This means doing all the following regarding all web-based software and services, and mobile apps:

  • posting accessible content
  • sending accessible communications
  • providing accessible access to web and mobile services

To learn more about the new rule, check out the ADA Title II Fact Sheet.  It is a plain language summary of the web and mobile technology section and provides a great overview.
