Hello there! My name is Lauren Abbott and I am a second semester Freshman. I’m majoring in visual arts and enjoy all things creative!

As an artist, my academic interest usually lies in fields that allow for creativity, which is why I was excited by this course. Writing is so versatile that each individual experience or approach to it is unique. I do tend to prefer creative writing, which we did at one point in this course, but the majority of the required writing was in the traditional academic style. I knew this going into the semester, and years of dread associated with looming writing projects made me anxious to begin work in this class.

I was very pleasantly surprised because that same dread was not harshly reflected in my instructor or my peers. My instructor’s contagious enthusiasm about writing and especially surrounding our topic: disability, kept me engaged and open to learning perspectives and writing techniques that were new to me.
