Welcome to my portfolio!
My name is Katie Singleton. I am a freshman from Long Island. I have a family of 6 and two dogs. I am excited for my college journey at New Paltz, and to continue playing field hockey through the school.
In sixth grade, my gym teacher encouraged me to try out for field hockey for the fall of seventh grade. Anytime she brought it up to me, I reminded her I played soccer and that was the sport that I would be playing for the school team. As time went on, and seventh grade got closer, the more my parents and gym teacher encouraged me to not do soccer. Although I played soccer for many years, I knew there were many good soccer players in my school so it would be a challenge to make the team. As a result, I became more nervous about trying out and started to think of the new opportunities that could come with playing a new sport. Ultimately, I decided to try out for field hockey…since then, I have never looked back. Playing field hockey has been the best decision that I have ever made. Since then, I have been on two travel teams and have found some of my best friends through playing this sport. Now, I am playing D3 field hockey to continue to do what I love.
In the fall of 2021, after covid-19 started to get better, I joined my now travel team. As soon as I joined the team, I was immediately welcomed and treated like I had been on the team for years. I made friends almost instantly with all my teammates, becoming practically inseparable. This travel team was newly formed, only establishing a team about a year and a half prior so new people came to our team constantly. Every time more people joined, the more friends I made. My team was just a great/healthy environment that made making friends with my teammates so easy. It’s been about two years since I first joined this team and I cannot be more thankful for the friendships I made along the way, and the friendships I’ll continue to make play field hockey in college.
This next photo is a picture of four of my closest friends. All of these friends I met through my travel team. One of them has been there since the beginning. As soon as I joined the team, we became best
friends. As for the others, two of them I met around January of 2022. They both guest played on our team for a showcase in Florida. Although we weren’t that close as soon as we met, we were still friends. It wasn’t until this past winter when we all were on the same team. The four of us became very close in a really short amount of time, shortly after, another girl joined our team, and she joined our little group right away. Since last winter, we have all gotten really close. They all mean so much to me and I’m glad we could all be on the same team. Now that I’m in college, it’s weird being away from them. Luckily, one of them is playing in college with me so I’m really grateful for that.
