I began with some small sketches of mandalas … on loose papers. I plan using collage methods, using inks and acrylic paint, then hot glue to adhere as part of my first chapter. I was struggling to find inspiration at first, but I really enjoy designing radial sketches and will continue with my mandala studies.

The second item is the Madonna, manipulated with beads, lace, inks and wax… done on loose text. I feel that these preliminary studies served as an exploration of materials for me. The Madonna was inspired by a recent loss in my life of a good friend, and I was looking for an outlet to express my emotions.

I am really looking forward to composing a full book, I am aiming for four total by the end of the week… these small collections will be compiled into my visual journal later this week!

  1. First off, I’m sorry to hear about your loss! As far as the artwork goes, I really like the Madonna piece. Hearing your inspiration was nice because to me it kind of felt like all of the beads and additions were like your memories of your friend. I get a sense of happiness when I look at it!

  2. The mandalas are quite interesting to look at. In the second one, it looks like there is some sort of symbol- does it have any particular meaning at all? I also really like the Madonna piece and all of the different textures in it. I can tell just from looking at it how much it means to you. Something to keep in mind in working on pages in a book, you can also consider the words on that page in possibly adding more meaning to the image being presented.

  3. I also am so sorry for your loss, Brette. As artists, it can be helpful to use artmaking to respond and process important events in our lives, and to connect with others emotionally, even when you choose not to reveal the exact narrative behind a work.
