Before you read this, go listen to Jazmine Sullivan’s (2022) song, Tragic.
Faculty of color are often overwhelmed with additional duties such as mentoring, advising, and supporting marginalized students (Shavers et al., 2014). This is even more prevalent among Women of Color who face the paradox of being devalued, yet hyper-included as a result of their intersectional identities (West et al., 2022). This workload of undue service obligations is one manifestation of the “Black tax” (Hirshfield & Joseph, 2012), or the “inclusion tax/invisible labor clause” (Melaku, 2022), which means Women of Color “continue to be recruited to engage in what could be referred to as pro-bono, pro-social diversity work that benefits PWIs, all while depleting themselves with little or no reward or recognition” (West et al., 2022, p. 153). These extra responsibilities divert time and energy away from research, teaching, and other aspects of faculty roles that are most pivotal for performance evaluations and career advancement (Croom & Patton, 2012). This unsustainable pace and constant juggling of expectations placed upon Women of Color in academia negatively impacts their productivity, creativity, efficacy, and ability to engage in self-care. So, what do you do “when your [gig] is tragic?”
