On Monday, April 14th, from 2-3pm, Matthias Heyne from Communication Disorders is holding a session on establishing boundaries in your classroom. While this session is not an activity to advocate for new program/college/university wide-standards, it is an activity to share and reflect on what we see as falling within our (personal) scope of practice – and whether we are qualified or expected to take on these responsibilities.
Alongside Heyne will be Catherine Herne, who will offer a perspective informed by her role as the current chair of the RTP committee, and Kathy Murphy, who will provide some framing in terms of trauma-informed pedagogy and talk briefly about her own scope of practice.
During this session, Heyne will be referencing both a podcast and a chapter by faculty development facilitator, adjunct faculty, and author, Karen Costa. Feel free to access both below:
- Podcast: “How Role Clarity and Boundaries Can Help Us Thrive”
- Chapter: Costa 2022 – An Educator’s Scope of Practice – How Do I Know What’s Mine – In Trauma-Informed Pedagogies – A Guide for Responding to Crisis and Inequality in Higher Education (If pressed for time, you can focus on the bottom of page 176 and onwards)
The session will be available both in-person in the Faculty Development Center (College Hall 113) and on WebEx.
