As a child, I was always interested in the art field. When playing with the vibrant colors in my crayon box, I would always become curious by what these colors would make on my laptop. I figured that I could make my art with these colors and formulate images on the computer. I did not realize it then, but I soon found out that I was interested in becoming a graphic designer. At Suny New Paltz, I am a graphic design major, because I have always been intrigued by digital art and what the colors we use daily can create digitally. Although, figuring out my intended major was not as easy some may think. Art is everywhere in the world and there are specific types of art fields that could have piqued my interest, but graphic art for me was something where I could create art and use all the elements that I had previously learned and apply them where they needed to be.

Graphic Design is a major where I can express myself through my art and am able to reach new goals for improving upon my art. I have always been placed since I was a child in art classes varying from physical drawing art, videography, graphic design, painting. When viewing the graphic design major, I felt as if I could achieve what I had learned in the prior courses I had taken. In high school, I took graphic design courses daily and was able to learn new information on graphic design that made me become interested in making it my major. Graphic Design is not only about making art on the computer, but it contains several components such as focusing on a target audience, which made me realize that I wanted to make my art so that I can reach out to a particular client and meet their requirements. I wanted to build upon my skills in graphic design and become a graphic designer to aid in helping one’s goal become accomplished through my artwork.

During my time at New Paltz, I have been able to learn and figure out new information about graphic design. I had taken a course called Design form which had required me to view the art world differently and place a new perspective on what art I was creating. It not only required using the computer but was hands on also to complete the artwork. Being hands on in my artwork was something I was not new to, but the course had applied new perspectives on how graphic design can impact the media. Being a graphic design major is something that is unique to me, and I am excited to be a part of changing the media’s perspective on art.
