This project allowed me to venture into a new medium of creation and feel content with any outcome. It’s sometimes very frustrating to have minimal control over what you’re making, but I actually found this process fairly meditative as I didn’t have specific expectations of how my photo would turn out. The entirety of the creation process was fairly trial and error oriented. The more I played around with the text, the more I was able to notice trends and adapt the text to create certain effects. I found it most challenging when I would make changes to the text and the file would no longer be functional; but I just had to either make smaller changes or make adjustments lower in the code. My favorite part of the project was collaborating with the rest of the class and playing off of what they were noticing in their editing and applying it to my photo.
This project was similar to painting or drawing in the way you gradually learn what tools you have (such as find & search, deleting, and adding) and the ways in which you can use them. It’s also similar in the way that the more you use your tools, the better you understand them, and the more you can make your photo look the way you want it to. I could see myself using this project with older students, having them adjust images and then use the databent photo as a reference for a collage. I could also imagine using it with late elementary aged students to show them the complexity of computers/code and how they can change their images by adjusting the code.
