Transitional Process from Research Paper to Presentation

Beginning the thought process for how to turn my seven-page research paper into a seven-slide presentation was not as difficult as I initially believed it would be. Once analyzing the overall layout of my research paper, I noted that I could create the slides just based off of the previous structure I had already created. This meant incorporating the major focus points- an introduction, how the industrial revolution led to the rise of the carbon emission crisis, climate change, ocean acidification, solutions, and lastly a conclusion to draw everything together. My goal was to incorporate specifically what I believed were the most important aspects. With this goal, I planned to bring both a background of the issue and the overall severity of the issue directly to my audiences’ attention. In order to show the severity of my environmental issue, I questioned just how I could do so without using mass amounts of data, especially for the supporting claims of climate change and ocean acidification. However, after going through peer reviews and discussions within class, it became clear to me that I needed to focus on using my voice as a tool. Being fully knowledgeable about the information I have spent weeks researching and deeply analyzing will allow me to build ethos using the limited amount of data I am able to incorporate. To also build ethos and logos, I decided to show major information within the slides, however, have extra talking points further expanding on these points. These extra talking points will be written on flash cards so as to not crowd and over fill the slides, yet are very necessary for explaining the full topic. I genuinely enjoyed turning my paper into a presentation, and I am excited to showcase parts of what we have each been individually working on throughout the semester. While creating this assignment, the only thing that has been in the back of my mind was that I might go over the time limit, not be able to use my voice to the best of my ability, or how there is so much more information I feel needs to be presented due to how serious of an issue carbon emission is. Through the process of the assignment and this written transcript, I feel shifting the research paper into a presentation benefited me as it gave me experience with critically analyzing to find the necessary points. It also gave me clarity on what I feel holds me back academically from achieving that confidence within my work. One media source that gave me guidance on how to structure, strengthen, and present my research was Everyone’s an Author by Andrea Lunsford and all, specifically pages 803 to 808. Reading this as an assignment as well as on my own time allowed me to consider all aspects of my presentation, and exactly how I would structure it to push my dynamic as I wanted. Key points of this source that I took away was the advice on how to deliver my presentation, and the need to center the piece around my main purpose. Overall, I found the oral assignment to be an entertaining assignment that even further developed my understanding of how major companies contribute to atmospheric carbon dioxide.
