Established in 2006 by Asian Studies Alumni and Friends of Asian Studies, the endowment supports initiatives the Asian
Studies Program deems most beneficial to Asian Studies students, providing a margin of excellence in the program.
Examples of fundable initiatives include student scholarships as well as activities relating to undergraduate involvement in
faculty research, independent student research, and travel support for study abroad opportunities in Asia.
Criteria and Selection Process:
A. Enrolled as a full-time SUNY New Paltz undergraduate currently, and for at least one more semester (Fall 2012)
B. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
C. Declared major in Asian Studies
D. One year of Asian language study already in progress or completed
E. Current progress report
F. Short essay by applicant (approx. 2 pages) stating interest in and commitment to Asian Studies, intended uses of the
award, any plans for study abroad in Asia (with timeline), target graduation date, and future goals
G. Three (3) recommendation letters: At least one must be from an Asian language instructor, and at least one must be
from a full-time faculty member of the Asian Studies Program
H. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate high achievement and promise in Asian language study and strong
overall performance in Asian Studies courses to date
Amounts:
Full-year scholarships are generally $2000. Students who will study abroad in Asia for a summer, semester or year are
eligible to request an additional travel stipend. Travel stipends are subject to verification of study abroad
enrollment. Scholarships and travel stipends are applied to the student’s account following Foundation guidelines.
