Discover intercultural exchange at SUNY New Paltz

The East-West Living & Learning Community (EWLLC) provides domestic students studying Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages and cultures and students from China, Japan, and South Korea a wonderful opportunity to live together in a residence life setting. The EWLLC creates an ideal environment for you to practice your language skills and learn about other cultures.

Throughout the academic year, you and your fellow members will plan and execute events and activities that highlight Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean culture such as a film series, guest speakers, performances, exhibits, presentations, website development, a newsletter, off-campus cultural tours, special meals and cuisine, calligraphy, etc.

Participation in the Community provides excellent preparation for students who will study abroad in China, Japan or South Korea. Students returning from study abroad are also invited to join the Community so that they can maintain their language skills.

The East-West Living & Learning Community is located in Ashokan Hall, and the space dedicated to the EWLLC consists of 3 suites with 9 bedrooms rooms to accommodate 16 students and a Resident Mentor.

Ashokan Hall has excellent facilities, including kitchens and common areas with various technological enhancements such as computer stations and a new large television. Ashokan is a 10-month hall so that international students will be able to stay in their rooms over the various breaks.
