My love for computers…. turned into a future

Like a lot of people, I plan on becoming a computer science major here at SUNY New Paltz. But do you want to know what led to the “I want to major in computer science” feeling in me? Stick around and I’ll tell you the whole backstory.

Ever since I could remember, I’ve always loved computers and consoles. I’ve always been intrigued on how they worked, the technology behind them and how everything works under the hood in them. It started around 2005 when my mother got herself a PS2, and when I got slightly older (around 4 or so) I just inherited it from her as well as all the games. I loved playing on that thing, even today it is still my favorite console of all time.

I also had a computer as well. it was an old Dell computer running Windows XP. I believe this was around 2009-2010 and I would love to play games on it and go on YouTube and experience what once was the early times for Web 2.0. Around 2010 I got my own computer, and that thing was used until the day it died in 2015. I loved it, and I would love to find it one day, fix it and dig through what was on it.

My old computer. Not the exact photo because it is LONG gone but this is the same model.

In 2016, I got a new computer and this time I actually started to get technical with my own computer. I would upgrade it, change the RAM, put a new graphics card in it, mod it and do whatever I liked with it. However, the CPU was very poor (it was some old AMD CPU from 2012) even for it’s time, so what I was able to do with it was pretty limited. It was actually around 2018 I started to really learn how these computer components work: CPU, GPU, hard drives, ethernet, emulation, all that good stuff.

My fourth computer, used from 2016 to 2019.

In late 2019, I finally saved up the money to build my own custom computer. It was unremarkable to say the least, but it was one I could call mine and I loved it. I changed it a lot since 2019, I upgraded the CPU, GPU, and RAM on it and I even added some shiny LED fans.

My fifth computer, from 2019 to 2023.

Then around September 2023, I decided to overhaul my computer and futureproof it, giving it all new, high-end components, some much needed upgrades (the GPU was 7 years old) as well as some improved aesthetics. This is definitely my proudest computer yet, and I plan on using it for as long as I can.

My current computer (The graphics card show has been upgraded to an RTX 3080 Ti since then)

Well, that is pretty much how I’ve decided that I want to major in computer science. They’ve always interested me, and I definitely want to study them more, especially on the software side of things. I primarily focused on computer hardware, but not much on software, so I would definitely love to learn about that! I hope you all enjoyed my backstory on how I got into computers and how it made me want to major in computer science!
